What does being a disrupter mean?

I was at an event last night where I was being filmed. There were several speakers and each one of them had different talents. The one theme that seemed to run through all of the topics was the concept of disruption. The idea that changing the status quo was needed to really have an impact on the world.

At first, I wasn't sure what I thought about the word, "disrupter." It sounded bigger than what most of us did for work, and maybe something that the cool kids say when they are speaking marketing, but it was hard to imagine that they were talking about me. It was a word, though, that made me think about what I do and how I do it.

It didn't take me long to realize that, in truth, I am a disrupter. So much more than a latebloomer, or any of the other monikers that I've used over the past couple of years, what I do is show people that it is ok to break the rules that we were told that you have to play by - and succeed at it.

Growing up, many of us were taught that to be successful you...

Sales vs Marketing

As a business owner, you know that you need to attract clients and make sales. If that doesn't happen, you will have a hard time earning the income that you need. But, have you ever considered the difference between making sales and a marketing campaign? There is a difference and it helps to understand when and how to use both for your business.

So, let's start with sales because everyone thinks that this is the most important aspect to making your business a success. But is it? I like to think of sales as the transaction that happens between you and your customer. It is the moment that you "close the deal" and get paid. Typically, sales are a one-time thing, not the development of a long-term relationship. It is the result of the "sales conversation" which inspires purchase (no matter what industry).

Marketing, on the other hand, is intended to create a long-term relationship with a potential customer and to build brand recognition for your business. Done well, marketing will...

Learn Something New

Uncategorized

Since it is true that nothing is impossible, it must also be true that we should work to keep learning for our entire lives. I mean, why waste the fact that everything is possible?!

So, I've started training for the marathon (still pretty nervous about this) and now I've decided to take on building an Instagram following for my puppy (@my.doodle.named.daisy). After only a few days, she has 800+ followers! WOW! How cool to learn that there are others out there who also love their goofy dogs. I'm loving it - and I am hoping that you will find something to learn that you love too!

Nothing is Impossible

Nothing is impossible - an idiom with a ring of truth. But what is also true is that the same knowledge that you can do anything can also lead you to some real fear. Watch this vlog to see how I deal with this issue.

Taking time to slow down

Uncategorized

Not that I am unhappy. In fact, despite the truth that the word happy is way, way, way over-analyzed, I am a pretty happy sort. My challenge comes with time flying. It just screams by me — or I feel sometimes like I am standing in front of one of those big fans, being blown across a space. I’m not sure if it has always been this way, but it sure is flying now. I think maybe it feels even faster because of the  busy time of life that I am in with kids going to college, business growing, aging parents and dogs, and so much more on the plate.

I’m not so special in this, either. Most people right now are all so busy and running all of the time. So much so that it can be easy for time to pass quickly by without us even noticing.

The last time that I sat down to write a blog I wrote about looking in the rearview mirror. That was great for that time, but now it is approaching the end of the year and it is time to start looking forward into the new one coming....

What's your story?

Uncategorized

Have you ever wondered why people buy from companies like Apple and Nike when they could get products very similar to the ones that these companies sell for less? Why spend thousands and wait in line? The answer, at least in large part, is the draw of the brand story that these, and other businesses, have created.

A brand story is kind of like the plotline in a novel. You have a hero (you or your business) that goes through effort to get where they are and are now sharing with you what they have learned. It works in every industry: imagine a realtor story where the real estate agent learned about housing after a particularly rough transaction for their own home, the owner of a small business selling healthy drinks created her product as a result of research done to help cure her ailing child, or a life-long corporate employee who is ready to move up the ladder and has spent a lifetime becoming a specialist in their career area. No matter the work that you do, your personal brand...
